Amanda Durrant March 11, 2008 English 11 Mrs. McInnis-Ryan Mr. MacDonald A Tale of Two Cities Blk B The Comparison and Contrast Lucie Manette and Madame Defarge “...It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair...” (5) Contrast, like the contrast displayed in this quote can be found throughout the historical novel “A Tale of Two Cities”. The author, Charles Dickens, is famous for the symbolism and contrast used in his writing. The contrasting imagery emphasizes the differences in characters and places. Dickens keeps the novel interesting using the different elements of the story contrasting chaos and peace, or light and darkness. He uses symbols like Lucie and her love to express the light in the novel, however, Madame Defarge and all her hatred is used to represent the darkness. Lucie Manette and Madame Defarge present excellent examples of contrasting characters. Lucie Manette is a caring young woman who is determined to help the people she loves. She influences the people around her with the amount of love and devotion she shows. Lucie has an amazing inner strength that she has obtained throughout her life. Her mother has passed, but her father stands by her side. “...And if, when I shall tell you of my name, and of my father who is living , and my mother who is dead, you learn that I have to kneel to my honoured father, and implore his pardon for having never for his sake striven all day and lain awake and wept all night...” (53). Lucie is admired by many, as she is such a good, kind-hearted person. She is devoted to caring for her daughter, her husband, and her father. Madame Defarge is Lucie’s opposite. She is a vengeful and bloodthirsty woman who is determined to succeed. Her hatred towards the St.Evremonde family is strong, as she suffered personal tragedy in her past because of them. Madame Defarge is unstoppable. “Then tell wind and fire where to stop... but don’t tell me.” (334) Within her knitting lies a register of people she wants killed during the revolution, this alone shows how this woman can turn something of lovely use into something horrible. Lucie and Madame Defarge have many differences within the few similarities they share. Comparing the two main women in the story reveals the light and dark contrast Dickens uses in every aspect of “A Tale of Two Cities”. Lucie holds the image of the perfect woman. She has devotion and compassion. Adversely, Madame Defarge is vivacious with hatred and anger. She resembles a failed woman in society. Madame Defarge also has no children which, back in that time, was looked down upon. Lucie, however, has a little girl with Charles Darnay. Much of the compassion Lucie withholds is shown through the love and care she showers her family with. The contrasts that these characters present make up much of the diversity Dickens has placed in the novel. The differences between Madame Defarge and Lucie Manette are plentiful. These differences are much of the novel’s contrast. In summary of it all, Lucie is love and Madame Defarge is hate. Two opposites work together with many of the other contrasting elements of the book to create a wonderful and exciting story. “...We had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way.” (5) Dickens is, in many ways, successful in creating contrast in the story, and in turn has made “A Tale of Two Cities” one of the most famous novels in English literature.
